I am so far behind with livejournal - both reading and posting. I have a bunch of half-written writeups about panels here & cool things people said, which I'll try to drag into shape before I get home. Theoretically I should start posting to alt.poly again (if only for a few weeks) but I need a decent pointy-clicky newsgroup reader that supports threading properly & has a killfile. What you won't be seeing from me are any posts about Las Vegas itself. The Strip is so colossally over the top that it broke my brain, and all I can really do is post the photos with comments and let you draw your own conclusions.

[livejournal.com profile] the_ogre is my new guru and spiritual leader. He managed to fix the main thing that was wrong with the laptop (refusing to boot) in minutes. It turned out to be an entirely moronic problem. Cut so you can play the guessing game. ) The touchpad is still broken, owing to the fact the connector is held on by sticky tape as shipped, but this was curable by buying a US $12.99 mini USB mouse.

Currently the weather here is absolutely awful (sandstorms), and several people who left for the airport have had their flights cancelled and come back to the con. I hope this isn't still going to be the case tomorrow. I'm at the stage of holiday where I really want to stay here with all the shiny people, but I also really do want to get home and hug my Richard.

a letter from America? (Sorry for the Proclaimers earworm there.)

Who wants a postcard from the US? Priority given to people that I won't actually be seeing at alt.polycon, as that would just be silly ;) Priority also given to people who answer this poll within the next 24 hours, as then I can print out your addresses onto labels to take with me, which greatly speeds up the whole postcard-writing process.
[Poll #1128263]
I've set the "who can view" to "none", so feel free to enter your address in the poll itself.

I am researching options for places I can eat in Las Vegas. There isn't a whole lot of choice. However, there is apparently a DONUT STORE which is entirely vegetarian and 70% of items are vegan. WE MUST GO THERE!!!

Ronald's Donuts

Who at alt.polycon is going to have a car with them? Apparently, if you're from out of town you can phone and they'll make up a huge box for you. Mmm.6 more restaurants under the cut. )

I have slowly been acquiring more organisation for my trip to alt.polycon 16. On Tuesday I went first into Kingston to have some passport photos taken, then to the Passport Office in central London to hand in my form for the Fasttrack service. Although my passport doesn't expire until March, the US is paranoid and likes you to have at least six months left. So I needed to renew the passport. Apparently, it normally takes "about 2 weeks" to renew an adult passport (at a cost of £72, iirc). The Fasttrack service is guaranteed to take no more than 10 days (at a cost of £97). There's also a Premium service which takes a mere 4 hours, but costs £114. In theory, with the trip being on 29th January, I could have just sent it the normal way, but I decided I'd pay a bit more to have it sped up.

Because I am stupid and pressed the wrong button on the passport photo machine, I have two sets of crap passport photos as well as the decent ones. I'm not sure what to do with them. Some of them will be ok for if I need another British Rail photocard or anything like that, but I'm not sure what to do with the mega-hairy ones (where there is BIG HAIR blocking out parts of my face). Perhaps someone would be able to commit art with them? That'd be nice.

I'm in the stage where the trip doesn't feel very real yet. Too many more weeks of work before it... I'm excited, but it seems like it's ages away.

But yay! I'm going to be meeting [livejournal.com profile] kshandra!

Travel Itinerary For: MISS HELENLOUISE $mylastname )

My mum & I will be in New York from about 6pm on Tuesday 29th January and available for socialising Wednesday or Thursday lunchtimes or evenings. I would very much like to introduce my mum to [livejournal.com profile] redbird, and anyone else who's available. My mum is much harder to feed than I am, but I'm sure we can find somewhere suitable. (Italian is fine as long as they can do vegan things that aren't salads - I don't eat salad in January! Also, if it's a lunchtime meal, I know there are several soup & sandwich places in the midtown area that specifically use the word vegan or vegetarian + dairy-free in labelling as I've seen them before - can't remember details of locations, though.)

Once again, I want Americans' phone numbers! Mobile/cellphone if possible, or whichever number is best to get hold of you at 3pm NY time on a Tuesday. I doubt I shall have trouble getting through Immigration when clearly travelling with my mum, but you never know - that side-trip to Las Vegas might mean that I'm running away to marry someone I met on the internet! I shall screen all comments to this post and unscreen any that don't contain a phone number.

Yay! It's really happening! Yay!!

You know when you have a crazy impulsive idea, and it's either the most brilliant or the most stupid thing you've ever thought of?

Yeah, that.

alt.polycon is now over :( :( I have a half-finished report about it sitting on my Windows Mobile device, but I don't want to finish that while there's still people around to be social with. Delightfully, I don't have to write an entry about dinner last night because If did that already. Hehe. Tonight I think I'm going to "dial out" for pizza again. [livejournal.com profile] brooksmoses, [livejournal.com profile] suzimoses, [livejournal.com profile] the_ogre and Cally all went for dinner in the hotel restaurant, but they were eating too early for me to be hungry.

Brooks, Aaron, Cally, [livejournal.com profile] elisem and I have been playing vast amounts of ZAR, which is an excellent game in the style of Uno, but nastier ;) [livejournal.com profile] kightp & [livejournal.com profile] johnpalmer and [livejournal.com profile] epi_lj & Ruth Anne have hot dates tonight :P I'm not sure what [livejournal.com profile] okoshun's doing, maybe decompressing and resting ready to drive 15 hours tomorrow. Personally, I have to leave here around 11am, although I might leave earlier and do some more shopping before going to the airport.

Note if you happen to view my livejournal directly or read my friends page )

OK, explain this to me: I was going to eat for dinner leftovers of two curries, aloo gobi and chana masala. Both are curries I eat and enjoy. So why did it disturb me to open the lid marked "aloo gobi" and find it was chana masala? If it had been chicken dhansak, I could understand it being disturbing, as I don't eat chicken. But I was planning to eat the chana masala anyway! Just I was expecting it to be in a box labelled "chana masala", not one labelled "aloo gobi"!

Also I am getting ridiculously excited about the food possibilities in Minneapolis. I followed links from the alt.polycon website and found a cafe where everything can be vegan and a multitude of vegan pizzas. Eeee! I'm getting excited and hungry just looking at the menus!

Some parts of the US are terrible for finding food I can eat - I survived Colorado Springs only because I could still eat cheese at that time (with vast quantities of lactase enzyme). But other parts, like Seattle and New York, are heaven. Some of these cities are so good I end up coming home and feeling disappointed with the mere 5 vegan restaurants in my city. Richard says I'm a food tourist - I go to places to eat new food. Well, yeah! What other reason for travelling could there be? :P OK, I travel to see friends that I don't get to see otherwise, and to see places - but mostly, I travel for food. I don't know why anyone, knowing me, could find that surprising.

OK. I just booked for alt.polycon. Hooray!

Have bought membership and emailed RA about roommate matching. Have not paid for any rooms or bought flights yet. Wibble.

I wish I wasn't so damn disorganised. Most people coming my sort of distance know much sooner than a month before an event if they're going or not. Although apparently Richard thought I was going all along, it was only me who didn't. (Having had to cancel bloody everything lately for one health thing or another, I wasn't going to be booking any flights until I knew what my body was doing.)

I'm thinking about arriving on Wednesday late afternoon/eveningish. Are any of you lot local to Minneapolis and would have space for me to stay on Wednesday or Thursday night? (I might be able to get a roommate at the hotel on Thursday night, but almost certainly won't be able to on Wednesday, as most people won't arrive that early.) Haven't decided yet if I'll leave on Sunday night or Monday. I probably want to come back via a couple of days in New York, which is doable with some of the airlines, but argh and wibble.
